It is a common observation when one visits the local markets that most traders do their business with children either under the tables or loitering in the market.

In response, Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) launched its early childhood care initiative to provide education and support for these often vulnerable children. KCM has constructed two early childhood centres at two market places, at Lubengele market in Chililabombwe and at Chiwempala market in Chingola.

Early childhood centres are high impact projects that directly benefit the vulnerable children from economically and socially stressed homes. Since inception the centres have provided education to 480 children for market traders and are supported by local volunteer caregivers. To date, over 60 parents, who are also traders at the two benefitting markets, have volunteered their time and effort to provide care and support to the children.

Due to the high success rate of the project and high demand from the community, the company is expanding the ECCED to three more centres and to date land for one centre in Chingola has been allocated to construct a new centre at another market place.
