Lusaka Zambia, 31st July 2026 - Konkola Copper Mines PLC (KCM) has awarded approximately ZMW12.2 billion (US$662 million) in contracts to local enterprises and increased local procurement to 52%, up from 31% before the mine’s revival.
The company has also achieved a major production milestone, with monthly copper output breaking the physiological barrier of 8,000 to 8,500 tonnes to reach 10,000 tonnes this month.
Speaking at the 98th Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Show in Lusaka, KCM Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Dr. John Kunda, on behalf of Acting CEO Malcolm Mewett, said the investments and production gains are part of KCM’s transformation programme to support Zambia’s economic diversification.
The event was graced by Mr. Siazongo Siakalenge, Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet for Finance and Economic Development, who represented Her Honour Mrs. W.K. Mutale Nalumango, the Vice President of the Republic of Zambia.
Also in attendance was the President of the Agricultural and Commercial Show Society, alongside other government officials, captains of industry and members of the public.
“Fostering trade and investment speaks directly to the role that strategic investment plays in unlocking economic opportunities for businesses, communities and the nation,” Dr. Kunda said.
He added that while copper remains the backbone of Zambia’s economy, agriculture, SMEs and commerce are equally critical in creating jobs, enhancing food security and driving inclusive growth.
Dr. Kunda noted that KCM is currently undertaking one of the most significant transformation programmes in its history, with substantial investment in mine rehabilitation, modern infrastructure, technology and people. As part of its commitment to local content, approximately 1,500 contracts and purchase orders have been awarded to Zambian contractors.
KCM is also a Diamond Sponsor of this year’s Show with a K450,000.00 contribution and is exhibiting in Jubilee Hall under the theme “Fostering Trade and Investment - Through the Konkola Deep Mining Project: Unlocking Zambia's Copper Future.”
The company says the Konkola Deep Mining Project remains focused on building a modern, sustainable operation that will support Zambia’s copper production targets while creating long-term value for employees, communities, investors and the nation.
Dr. Kunda thanked the Agricultural and Commercial Show Society for the excellent organization of the event and reaffirmed KCM’s commitment to partnerships that drive national development.
