The Public Health Department of Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has teamed up with the
Chililabombwe Municipal Council to public and private facilities in an effort to combat the
spread of cholera in the district. The initiative is meant to promote proper sanitation and
ensure a healthy and safe learning environment.

As of Thursday 30th January, 2025, over 52 schools which include Kawama, Kakoso
Combined School and Ming’omba Primary School, several markets and police posts were
disinfected as the exercise continues. The facilities sprayed expressed their gratitude for the intervention, recognizing the importance of maintaining proper sanitation to prevent the spread of disease and to ensure that learning and business continue uninterrupted.

KCM Manager for Community Medicine Dr Janet Sikasote said, “We working with the
council and other stakeholders in the district. Our officers are part of the rapid response
team tasked to bring the situation under control. We are distributing 1000kg of lime for pit
latrines, provided granular chlorine for the disinfection of wells along-side creating
awareness and sensitization of local communities and homes about cholera prevention
practices.” The effort underscores KCM’s commitment to supporting public health and social engagement in its areas of operation and further highlights the importance of partnerships in addressing public health challenges, ensuring that the community remains protected.

Chililabombwe District has highest number of Cholera cases in the country 86 cases and five deaths recorded. Health authorities in the country have emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention for cholera symptoms and urged restaurant owners and food vendors to follow safety guidelines. The general populace is also being reminded to wash hands regularly, drink safe water and cook food thoroughly to prevent Cholera.
