KCM Takes Bold Steps To Eradicate Menstrual Poverty

November 5, 2025

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) continues to champion community development through its
campaign to end menstrual poverty, with the latest outreach taking place last week in
Nampundwe.

The initiative aims to empower young people, especially girls in rural areas, by equipping
them with essential knowledge and practical skills in menstrual health and hygiene management. The program is set to expand across all of KCM’s areas of operation, reaching
additional communities throughout October.

KCM has partnered with Innersight vision partners – Reusable Pads, a well-established
organization that trains youths to produce sanitary pads and supplies menstrual hygiene
products. Having previously worked with companies like Airtel, Innersight Vision Partners
welcomed KCM’s involvement, emphasising the significant impact this collaboration will
have in eradicating menstrual poverty.

During the Nampundwe event, boys and girls received training on personal hygiene, while
the girls also learned about menstrual health management. Following the sessions, participants were trained to make reusable sanitary pads, a valuable skill that promotes menstrual hygiene and empowers young Deople with practical knowledge.

Through the training, youths will also acquire the skills to make sanitary pads, equipping
them not only to maintain proper menstrual hygiene but also to create a source of
sustainable income.

In total, 2,500 sanitary pads were distributed among young people and schoolgirls in the
area, benefiting 500 girls and ensuring immediate support for those who need it most. The
program is ongoing, with quarterly distributions planned to guarantee a consistent supply
of sanitary products to schools and communities, particularly in rural areas where access
remains limited.

Through initiatives like this, KCM continues to reaffirm its commitment to promoting
health, education, and empowerment among Zambia’s youth, ensuring that no girl misses
school because of menstrual poverty.
